The Action is part of a Global Project aiming at connecting the Spanish high speed rail network in the Core Urban Node of Madrid. The Global Project consists in constructing a UIC gauge tunnel connecting Chamartin station (Mediterranean Corridor) with Atocha station (Atlantic Corridor) and the necessary adaptation works at both stations in order to eliminate the current barriers in the transfer between both Corridors.
This Action contributes to the Global Project by conducting the basic and detailed design studies for construction, which are a preparation for the planning, defining and tendering of the works for the necessary adaptations at Atocha Station.
The studies include the following adaptations to Atocha station:
- the new ‘Estación Pasante’, containing 4 new underground high-speed tracks and 2 platforms and associated services;
- the new Arrivals Hall at Mendez Alvaro Street above the ‘Estación Pasante’;
- new accesses to the ‘Estación Pasante’ from the new Arrivals Hall at Mendez Alvaro Street and the ‘Marquesina Histórica’;
- construction of a new ‘Edificio de Servicios’ to replace the current Service Building which needs to be demolished when making the necessary changes to Atocha Station.
