This CEF funded action covers the first phase of a global project, aiming at improving the capacity and safety of the railway line connection’s and poor technical conditions on lines no. 14 and 811 between Łódź Kaliska and Ostrów Wielkopolski, which are crossing the Łódź and the Wielkopolskie Province, on the North Sea–Baltic railway freight corridor.
The optimisation of the line is of great importance as it does not currently conform to TEN-T core network requirements in order to connect the Łódź agglomeration urban node to the core network. The Connecting Europe Facility program covers 65% of the final costs.
This project’s phase aims at addressing these shortcomings through the upgrade of the 42.52 km railway line. A detailed design will be developed to start the subsequent works which will then allow the reduction of travelling times and removing capacity bottleneck by increasing the maximum speed of freight and passenger trains to 100 km/h and 120 km/h. Moreover, the infrastructure will allow for a maximum train length of 750 metres, as well as a maximum axis load of 221 kN per axis, resulting in an improvement of its effectiveness and competitiveness of rail traffic.
