Currently the high speed lines to the north and northwest of Spain start and finish at Madrid Chamartin station, while the rest of the high speed network starts and finishes in Madrid Atocha station. This CEF funded action is a part of a global project which aims to remove the current bottleneck by implementing a standard gauge tunnel which will connect both stations.
The plan includes the restructuring of the Chamartin main station by increasing its capacity to become a hub for high-speed lines. Connecting Europe Facility” will finance 50%, 1.6M€ of this project which aims at decongesting the city.
The action consists of studies to adapt facilities and to configure the Madrid Chamartin station to meet the forecasted demands of changed traffic flow (both of trains and passengers). This will allow the adaption of Chamartin station facilities in close connection with the previous project of Madrid Nuevo Norte project – an old Chamartín operation, recently approved by the Madrid City Council.
